Spring 2017 Cohort Arrives For The NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ)
NEW YORK – The fourth class of the NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ) arrived in January from all over the United States, as well as one student all the way from Kampala, Uganda. The class of 12 students represent eight different universities.
They will participate in the unique semester-long, off-campus study program operated by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute at The King’s College in NYC. The students live in student housing at King’s, where they take three classes, including capstone courses with Prof. Terry Mattingly and Prof. Paul Glader. They also work 20 hours per week in a news media outlet in NYC, earning six academic credits and pursuing at least one byline per week for their portfolios.
“We are proud to bring a diverse group of students from around the U.S. to work in newsrooms in New York City,” said NYCJ director Paul Glader, an associate professor in journalism and entrepreneurship at King’s. “This experience will be a huge boost to the student journalists as they pursue a career in the news media. And it will be a huge boost for news media outlets in New York, which will benefit from fresh ideas and reporting these students bring to New York.”
The program has also included newsroom tours at media outlets such as The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal and Buzzfeed.
Here is a roster of the Fall 2016 class of NYCJ:
Amanda Florian comes to us from Milligan College in Tennessee. She will be interning at the entertainment magazine and news portal Backstage during her time in New York.
Jada Fisher joins us from Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. She will be working at Salon.com.
Angela Groom comes to us from Providence Christian College in California. She will be interning at American Spa magazine for the spring semester.
Grace King also comes to NYCJ from Olivet Nazarene University. She will be at BOLD Global for the duration of the program.
Carly Wheeler joins us from Taylor University in Indiana. She will also be at BOLD Global for the spring.
Nathan DiCamillo joins from Olivet Nazarene University for his final semester of undergraduate. He will be interning at Newsweek magazine.
Jason Stormer is coming to us from Bethel University in Minnesota. He will also be interning at Salon.com.
Daniel Mooers comes to us from Dordt College in Iowa. He will be interning at International Business Times.
Gertrude Too-Rom Lamunu comes to us all the way from Uganda Christian University. She is also completing her last semester here in New York, and will be interning with World magazine.
Jamie Roebuck-Joseph is a junior from Azusa-Pacific University. She will be covering the international affairs beat at the International Business Times.
Annie Mapp comes to us from the University of Mississippi. She will be interning at The Story Exchange.
Beret Leone also joins us from Bethel University in Minnesota. She will be working at the entertainment publication Playbill during her time in the program.
The King’s College, located in Manhattan’s financial district, is a Christian liberal arts college in the heart of New York City. It is also host to the NYC Semester program, which welcomes students from 25 partner schools, as well as students from non-partner schools, to spend a semester studying and working in the city. This coming Fall The King’s College will be introducing two new tracks of the NYCS program: The NYC Semester in Business (NYCB) and the NYC Semester in Theater (NYCT).
