New York – The McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute is training Dow Jones News Fund business reporting interns this Spring, preparing 28 young business journalists in two sessions before their summer internships begin.

MPJI director Paul Glader, an associate professor in journalism at The King’s College in New York City and a former award-winning reporter for The Wall Street Journal, will lead instruction May 21 to May 27 for 18 top journalism students who will be paid interns at several business news outlets.

The second session, May 29 to June 4, is geared specifically to 10 students interning at American City Business Journals publications in 10 of the company's 43 markets.

Both training sessions will be held at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University, featuring several visits to news organizations, the New York Stock Exchange and other sites around New York City. Interns will learn from leading business journalists from outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Thomson Reuters and The Associated Press. 

The Dow Jones News Fund, based in Princeton, N.J., will send 85 undergraduate and graduate students to work this summer as data and digital journalists, business reporters and multiplatform editors in paid internships at 55 of the nation’s leading news organizations. The News Fund received more than 750 applications last fall.

Linda Shockley, managing director, said, “We are excited about the new directions for these valuable internship programs. Media companies are investing in the talent students bring to the work and partnering with the Fund to fulfill our mission.”

Training sessions or residencies ahead of the summer internships are hosted at five other journalism schools in May and June including the University of Missouri, Arizona State University, Temple University, The University of Texas-Austin, and Penn State University. The interns will be paid weekly salaries starting at $400. Those returning to college receive $1,000 scholarships.

“The DJNF program is a great springboard to help some of the top student journalists nationwide land in the field of business journalism,” Glader said.  "Operating the business reporting program for DJNF fits with MPJI’s mission of training young journalists." 

MPJI also operates the NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ) program at The King’s College, the Summer Academy in media and journalism at The King’s College (for high school students) and the new Journalism, Culture and Society major at The King’s College.

Recent King’s alumnus Michael Sheetz (2017 graduate with a degree in PPE) was a 2016 Dow Jones News Fund intern at TheStreet.com. He served as editor in chief of the student newspaper at The King’s College, The Empire State Tribune. He was hired full-time at the national business news network CNBC, where he also interned twice.
