NEW YORK – The ninth class of the NYC Semester in Journalism (NYCJ) arrived in August from all over the United States. The class of 13 students represent eight different universities.
They will participate in the unique semester-long, off-campus study program operated by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute at The King’s College in NYC. The students live in student housing at King’s, where they take three classes, including capstone courses with Prof. Terry Mattingly, a syndicated religion columnist, and Prof. Paul Glader, a former staff writer at The Wall Street Journal. Under the guidance of Prof. Clemente Lisi (former deputy head of news at the New York Daily News), they also work 20 hours per week in a newsroom in NYC, earning six academic credits under and pursuing at least one byline per week for their portfolios.

Joe Hiti is a journalism major at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn. He will be interning at the Brooklyn Paper. Joe has served as the sports reporter at the Bethel Clarion Newspaper.
Rebecca Elliot is a multimedia journalism major at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif. She will be interning at American Spa Magazine. Rebecca has worked as a staff writer at The Point Weekly.
Matthew Hendley is a broadcast journalism major at the University of Mississippi on Oxford, Miss. He will be interning at CBS’s 60 Minutes program. Matthew has worked as a news anchor at NewsWatch Ole Miss, play-by-play announcer at Rebel Radio 92.1FM and a local government reporter at the Beat Reporter.
Allyson O’Neil is a journalism major from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn. She will be interning at Bold TV. Allyson was the assistant video editor at the Bethel University Clarion.
Russell Spacy is a journalism and visual media major at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. He will be interning at Newsweek’s video desk. Russell has worked at The Chimes as a freelance writer.
Hadley Hitson is a journalism and Spanish double-major at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss. She will be interning at Fortune Magazine. Hadley has worked as the assistant news editor at The Daily Mississippian, an intern in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Public Affairs and a member of the White House Internship Program in the Communications and Press Office.
Carlson Wakefield is a communications major at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. He will be interning at SWNS Media Group. Carlson has worked at The Threefold Advocate a sports editor.
Jenna Owens is a public relations, events and entertainment major at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. She will be interning at First Things. Jenna has worked at 6th Street Public Relations Agency for clients like TruAdopt and HOPE International.
Ryan Turner is a journalism, culture and society major at The King’s College in New York City. He will be interning at the Ashima Group. Ryan has worked at the Empire State Tribune as the campus editor.
Charissa Enns is a journalism major at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. She will be interning at The Story Exchange. Charissa has been a copy editor and staff writer for Zu Media.
Sam Johnson is a journalism major at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn. He will be interning at SWNS Media Group. Previously, Sam worked at the Bethel University Clarion as the senior sports reporter, was the editor for the Maxfield Times and a contributor at the Greening Frogtown.
Sarah Sudfeld is a journalism major at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. She will be interning at Newsweek. Sarah worked as a writer for the Zu Magazine and Zu News, was a content contributor for Zu TV, a social media intern at her university’s Office of Communiversity and a volunteer videographer at Assist International.
Elli Esher is a journalism, culture and society major at The King’s College in New York City. She will be interning at the Brooklyn Paper. Elli was a staff writer at the Empire State Tribune, a marketing and fundraising intern at the Metro Micro Gallery and an intern at The Art League.
