Official Rules - The King’s College Summer Academy Social Media Challenge 

The “Summer Academy Social Media Challenge” is a contest hosted by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute (MPJI), housed at The King’s College at 56 Broadway, New York, NY 10004. This contest will run from March 27th, 2020, through May 1, 2020 until 11:59 EST and is open to residents in the 50 United States who are at least 18 years old and currently enrolled as students at The King’s College in New York City. The contest is not open to full-time staff and faculty at The King’s College.

To enter, participants must create one or more social media posts that spread information about The King’s College Summer Academy program taking place in July 2020. The use of explicit language and/or images, or any content contrary to The King’s College honor code is prohibited and will automatically disqualify a participant.

We ask that participants do engage in broad information dissemination about Summer Academy.We ask that participants do not engage in the following:

  • Targeted information dissemination to individuals

  • Solicitations to individuals

  • Contacting potential enrollment applicants or aiding students in filling out enrollment application information

The prizes and means of determining the winner of each prize are outlined below.

Prize #1: $500 in the form of a check. This prize will go to the most “viral” post, indicated by the highest number of total likes, shares and comments received on an entry post. The participant must either provide a link to the post or a screenshot for the MPJI team to review.

Prize #2: $800 in the form of a check. This prize will go to the participant whose social media content generates the most applications to the Summer Academy program. The recipient of this prize will be determined when the MPJI team reviews the applications submitted for the Summer Academy program. If an applicant notes that they were motivated to apply as a result of the participant's social media post, that application will be added as a point for the participant. The participant with the most points will receive prize #2.

Prize #3: $500 in the form of a check. This prize will go to the participant whose social media content generates the second most applications to the Summer Academy program. The recipient of this prize will be determined when the MPJI team reviews the applications submitted for the Summer Academy program. If an applicant notes that they were motivated to apply as a result of the participant's social media post, that application will be added as a point for the participant. The participant with the second most points will receive prize #3.

Prize #4: $200 in the form of a check. This prize will go to the participant whose social media content generates the third most applications to the Summer Academy program. The recipient of this prize will be determined when the MPJI team reviews the applications submitted for the Summer Academy program. If an applicant notes that they were motivated to apply as a result of the participant's social media post, that application will be added as a point for the participant. The participant with the third most points will receive prize #4.

Prize recipients are fully responsible for paying taxes on the funds received and will need to submit a completed W-9 to The King’s College before receiving their prize. No purchase necessary for entry.

Winners will be determined and announced on the @JMPJournalism Twitter account by May 15, 2020. In the event of a tie for any of the prizes listed above, the prize will be split between recipients who tied. A participant may not win more than one prize. In the event that a participant creates a post that is the most viral (Prize #1) and also qualifies to receive Prize #2 or #4, the participant will receive the prize of higher value. The runner-up for the prize not awarded will then become the recipient of that prize. In the event that a participant creates a post that is the most viral (Prize #1) and also qualifies to receive Prize #3, the participant will be awarded Prize #3. The runner-up for the Prize #1 will then become the recipient of that prize.

The “Summer Academy Automatic Winnings Challenge” is a contest hosted by the McCandlish Phillips Journalism Institute (MPJI), housed at The King’s College at 56 Broadway, New York, NY 10004. This contest will run from April 23rd, 2020, through June 15, 2020 until 11:59 EST and is open to residents in the 50 United States who are at least 18 years old and currently enrolled as students at The King’s College in New York City. The contest is not open to full-time staff and faculty at The King’s College. The contest is not open to part-time student workers in the admissions department at The King’s College.

To enter, participants must create one or more social media posts that spread information about The King’s College Summer Academy program taking place in July 2020. The use of explicit language and/or images, or any content contrary to The King’s College honor code is prohibited and will automatically disqualify a participant.

The prizes and means of determining the winner of each prize are outlined below.

Automatic Prize: Participants will be awarded $20 for every Summer Academy applicant generated by the participant’s social media content. When the MPJI team reviews the applications submitted for the Summer Academy program, if an applicant notes that they were motivated to apply as a result of the participant's social media post, that application will be added as a point for the participant. The total number of points gained multiplied by $20 will be the prize awarded to the participant.

Prize recipients are fully responsible for paying taxes on the funds received and will need to submit a completed W-9 to The King’s College before receiving their prize. No purchase necessary for entry.

Winners will be determined and notified via email by June 30, 2020. A participant may not win prizes in both the “Summer Academy Automatic Winnings Challenge” and the “Summer Academy Social Media Challenge.” If a participant qualifies for a prize in both challenges, by default they will receive the prize from the “Summer Academy Social Media Challenge” only.
